McCullough Junior High students will walk into a renovated gym and new classrooms when school resumes in August, one of nine bond-funded construction projects wrapping up or underway across The Woodlands area.
The status update, reported Thursday by Community Impact, covers seven Conroe ISD projects funded by the district's $1.9 billion bond voters approved in 2023, plus two Tomball ISD projects.
What's done or nearly done
McCullough Junior High, at 3800 S. Panther Creek Drive in The Woodlands, is finishing gym and classroom additions in time for the August start of school. The campus feeds The Woodlands High School.
Knox Junior High, at 12104 Sawmill Road in Spring, is wrapping up a $23.8 million renovation that includes new infrastructure, flooring and paint. That project is also 2023 bond-funded.
Kacy Arnold Elementary, a brand-new K-6 campus at 5175 Woodsons Spring Drive in Spring, opens in August. The school is named after the late Kacy Stanley Arnold, who served as assistant director of special education for Conroe ISD.
The South Agriculture Facility at 1091 Pruitt Road in The Woodlands, an expansion of the district's career and technical education program for raising livestock, is also scheduled for August completion.
Creekside Park's $39 million addition
Across district lines, Tomball ISD has completed a $39 million, two-story addition at Creekside Park Junior High, 8711 Creekside Green Drive in The Woodlands. The district held a ribbon cutting for the project, which will house fifth graders starting in the 2026-27 school year. Funded by Tomball ISD's 2021 bond, the addition makes Creekside Park the district's only 5th-through-8th-grade campus.
Still to come
Grand Oaks Junior High, a new campus at 28075 Woodsons Grand Drive in Spring, is set to open in January 2027 to ease overcrowding. A Grand Oaks Ninth-Grade Campus at the same address is scheduled for August 2027. Both are 2023 bond projects.
Oak Ridge High School at 27330 Oak Ridge School Road in Conroe will finish interior renovations in August, with new fine arts additions targeted for December.
Budget vote ahead
Conroe ISD's Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote Tuesday, Aug. 18, on adopting a $770 million balanced budget for fiscal year 2026-27. The proposed tax rate would hold at 94.96 cents per $100 of taxable property valuation.
"The low is that we were not able to include a compensation increase for our employees this year, one they truly deserve," Board President Misty Odenweller told the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday, Aug. 12, when discussing the proposed budget.
The Aug. 18 meeting is open to the public.
