Residents can grab a free cup of coffee and chat with local law enforcement officers Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Kroger Starbucks, 8000 Research Forest Drive.
The drop-in event has no agenda and no speeches. The format is simple: officers sit down with whoever walks in, and the conversation goes wherever it goes.
Coffee with a Cop is a national program that started in 2011 when Hawthorne, California, Police Chief Robert Fager wanted a less formal way for his officers to connect with residents. The first gathering was held at a local McDonald's. The program has since grown into a nonprofit that has hosted more than 15,000 events across all 50 states and 40 countries, according to coffeewithacop.com.
The program's guidelines recommend holding events in the main dining area of coffee shops or restaurants rather than government buildings, creating a neutral space that encourages drop-in participation, according to a Police Chief Magazine feature on the initiative.
The Aug. 18 event is the latest in a string of informal community-police meetups The Woodlands Township has promoted this summer. The Township hosted "Shakes with a Sheriff" on July 10 at Milkshake Factory, 4747 Research Forest Drive, connecting residents with local law enforcement and Township Neighborhood Services. On June 26, the Township held "Sirens and Snow Cones" at Capstone Park, offering free treats and a meet-and-greet with Montgomery County Sheriff's Office deputies.
The event listing on Woodlands Online says the goal is straightforward: knowing your community and public safety agencies strengthens residents' ability to stay informed, involved and safe.
