Love Fosters Hope will bring runners and families to The Woodlands Waterway on Saturday, Oct. 3, for its 15th annual Run for Hope, a fundraiser supporting foster children and teens across Montgomery and Harris counties.
The race starts at 7 a.m. and offers three options: a timed 10K ($50), a timed 5K ($40) and a one-mile fun run ($15 to $30 depending on age). Medals go to overall 5K and 10K winners and to male and female age-group winners. The one-mile event is untimed.
Beyond the course, the morning includes breakfast, face painting, a bounce house and other children's activities, according to Woodlands Online.
Love Fosters Hope is headquartered at 2001 Timberloch Place in The Woodlands and operates summer camps for foster youth at three age levels: Royal Family Kids Camp for children 7 to 11, Teen Reach Adventure Camp for ages 12 to 15 and Bridge Camp for older teens 16 to 19. Year-round, the organization pairs campers ages 12 to 19 with one-on-one mentors and hosts reunion outings such as roller skating, zoo trips and museum visits.
The nonprofit also runs The Net, a transitional support program for young adults who have aged out of foster care, providing practical resources to help them become independent adults.
The organization cites national statistics to frame its mission: one year after aging out of care, 66% of young adults are incarcerated, homeless or dead, and fewer than 2% of former foster children earn a college degree.
