Woodlands-area shoppers who bought salsas, dips or guacamole at Target, Trader Joe's, Walmart, Whole Foods or Kroger should check their refrigerators. Taylor Fresh Foods issued a voluntary recall Sunday, Aug. 9, covering 20 ready-to-eat products containing jalapeño peppers linked to a multistate salmonella outbreak.

The recalled items were sold across 26 states, including Texas, with "Best If Used By" dates running through Aug. 16. That means some products may still be sitting in local fridges.

Federal investigators traced the contamination to jalapeños grown by a single farmer in Sinaloa, Mexico, and imported by San Diego-based Coast Citrus Distributors, according to the FDA's outbreak advisory. As of Aug. 4, the CDC had confirmed 345 illnesses and 36 hospitalizations across 27 states. Three cases have been reported in Texas. No deaths have occurred.

What's recalled at Woodlands-area stores

According to the FDA recall notice, the following products distributed to Texas are affected:

Target: Taco Dip (20 oz), Mango Pico De Gallo (11 oz), Spicy Guacamole (13 oz), Pico de Gallo (16 oz) and Authentic Guacamole (13 oz), with best-by dates between Aug. 7 and Aug. 14.

Whole Foods: Salsa Fresca Medium (12 oz), Pico de Gallo Mild (10 oz), Pico de Gallo Spicy (10 oz), Salsa Roja Medium (12 oz) and Pineapple Mango Salsa Mild (10 oz), with best-by dates between Aug. 7 and Aug. 16.

Kroger: Private Selection Spicy Roast Beef Sandwich (8.53 oz), Spicy Jarlsberg Dip (10 oz) and Spicy Pimento Cheese Dip (10 oz), with best-by dates between Aug. 7 and Aug. 15.

Walmart: Mild Pico De Gallo (10 oz), with best-by dates between Aug. 8 and Aug. 16.

Trader Joe's: Fiesta Style Salad Shrimp (11.11 oz), with best-by dates between Aug. 7 and Aug. 12.

What shoppers should do

Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, typically appearing six hours to six days after exposure. Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems face higher risk of severe illness.
