Drivers on Rayford Road, Grogan's Mill Road, Highway 242 and the I-45 frontage roads are navigating active construction zones in August as seven road projects move through various stages of completion across The Woodlands area.

Two projects are already finished. Three more should wrap by fall. And a $42.6 million drainage overhaul along I-45 won't be done until 2028.

Here's what's happening, where, and when residents can expect relief.

Closest to done

Rayford Road at Discovery Creek Boulevard: A new traffic signal and left-turn lanes in both directions were physically complete as of Aug. 7, according to Community Impact Newspaper. Signal activation was expected by mid-August. Cost: $584,000, funded by the Montgomery County road bond.

Flintridge Drive (South Panther Creek to Gosling Road): Westbound lanes were widened, reconfigured and restriped, and turn-lane storage was extended. The work was complete as of Aug. 7. Cost: $166,411, road bond.

Woodlands Parkway shoulders (FM 2978 to I-45): Asphalt shoulder replacement along the corridor was also complete as of Aug. 7. Cost: $1.23 million, road bond.

Wrapping up this fall

Grogan's Mill Road at North Millbend Drive: The intersection is being redesigned with a new signal layout, fresh pavement and restriping. Intersection construction was done as of Aug. 7, but permanent signal equipment won't arrive until mid-September. Expected completion: fall 2026. Cost: $910,000, road bond.

Grogan's Mill Road at Grogan's Mill Village Center: The traffic signal at the shopping center entrance is being replaced. Foundations were poured and curb work was scheduled for August, with signal equipment delivery expected in mid-September. Expected completion: fall 2026. Cost: $172,500, road bond.

The big TxDOT projects

Highway 242 widening (FM 1488 to I-45): The Texas Department of Transportation is widening lanes and restriping intersections within the existing right of way. Contractor Posillico Civil Inc. had the project at 86% complete as of TxDOT's most recent update. Work began in October 2023 and is scheduled to finish in the fourth quarter of 2026. Cost: $29.11 million, federal and state funds.

I-45 frontage road drainage (Shenandoah Park Drive to Highway 242): TxDOT contractor James Construction Group is building drainage improvements on both the northbound and southbound feeder roads. The project was 25% complete as of a July 2026 TxDOT update. Timeline: second quarter 2025 through third quarter 2028. Cost: $42.63 million, 80% federal and 20% state.

Who's paying

Five of the seven projects draw from the $480 million road bond Montgomery County voters approved in May 2025. Those five total roughly $3.06 million. The county had spent more than $102 million from the bond program as of a July 2026 Commissioners Court meeting, with $292 million in authorized bonds still available to issue.

The two TxDOT projects together account for $71.74 million in federal and state money.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Ritch Wheeler, who oversees county road work in The Woodlands area, announced a broader signal modernization initiative in a June 2026 press release, calling it "a major step forward in how we manage traffic throughout Precinct 3." That program is installing adaptive signal technology on Woodlands Parkway as its first corridor, replacing systems last upgraded in 2014-15.
