Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ritch Wheeler will host a free workshop Tuesday evening on how to keep polling places respectful and welcoming ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.

The session, titled "Election Day Etiquette: Respecting the Voter's Experience," runs from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Kevin Brady Community Center, 2250 Buckthorne Pl. Wheeler and his staff will lead the hour-long discussion, which is free and open to the public.

The workshop will cover voter expectations at polling locations and what residents can do to help every voter feel comfortable exercising their right to vote, according to the event listing on Woodlands Online. The commissioner's office describes the goal as creating a "positive, respectful, and welcoming environment" at the polls.

Wheeler, a U.S. veteran and Baylor graduate who moved to Montgomery County in 2009, has been vocal about voter engagement in the county. During a July 24 Commissioners Court debate over a proposed courthouse bond, he pointed to dismal turnout on a previous road bond election.

"When we went out for the road bond, we had 4% of the registered voters turn out. 1.8% of the population … I would rather have more input from the voters," Wheeler told Community Impact during that July 24 debate.

No specific agenda or curriculum beyond the general description has been released. The commissioner's office did not provide additional details about whether the workshop will address poll worker conduct, campaign signage rules or other specific topics.

The Kevin Brady Community Center is a Precinct 3 facility at Buckthorne Place in The Woodlands. Texas's general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, and the workshop is one of the first visible efforts locally to prepare residents for the fall voting season.
