Families can smash their leftover Halloween pumpkins at The Woodlands Township's fifth annual Pumpkin Smash on Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Sterling Ridge Park and Ride, 8001 McBeth Way.

The event is free.

The Township's Environmental Services Department will run the event from 2 to 5 p.m., according to the Township's event listing. Residents can bring carved or whole pumpkins and pick how to destroy them. Pumpkins can be dropped from 80 feet, cracked open by hand or walloped with a bat. Township staff will be on site to keep things safe.

Americans throw away more than a billion pounds of pumpkins each year, according to the Township. All collected pumpkins at the event will be composted and turned into nutrients for local gardens instead, the Township said in a press release.

Pumpkins painted with acrylic paint are accepted. Residents should remove all non-compostable items before arriving, including candles, stickers, yarn, googly eyes and plastic items.

The Township recommends closed-toe shoes, safety goggles and gloves. Protective gear will also be available at the event.

Composting experts will be on hand to answer questions and share details about free upcoming composting classes for residents interested in starting at home.

Last year's fourth annual Pumpkin Smash, held Nov. 8, 2025, at the same location, featured a catapult among its smashing options and was sponsored by Indorama Venture and Waste Management.
