Encompass Health will replace its rehabilitation hospital on its The Woodlands campus with a new 60-bed facility featuring all-private patient rooms.

The company announced the project Thursday, Sept. 24, as part of a broader expansion in Montgomery County. The replacement hospital is expected to open in 2029.

The current hospital is at 18550 I-45 South. The campus carries a Conroe mailing address but has long been branded as The Woodlands location. Encompass Health said construction will be planned so the existing facility can keep treating patients without interruption during the build.

"We are making a significant investment in our longstanding presence in The Woodlands through a new, state-of-the-art replacement hospital that will enhance the patient experience for years to come," Craig Funk, group president of Encompass Health's Southwest region, said in the announcement.

The Houston Chronicle described the existing facility as aging. The project cost has not been disclosed, the Chronicle reported.

The new hospital will serve patients recovering from strokes, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions. Patients will have access to 24-hour nursing care along with physical, occupational and speech therapy, according to the company's press release.

Encompass Health, formerly known as HealthSouth, is the largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the country. The Birmingham, Alabama-based company runs 177 hospitals across 39 states and Puerto Rico.

The company also announced a separate 24-bed satellite rehabilitation hospital in Conroe, its first small-format facility. That project is expected to open in late 2027.

No groundbreaking date or construction timeline has been announced for The Woodlands replacement hospital beyond the 2029 target opening.
