The Woodlands High School senior Elton Martin plans to announce his Division I college commitment around mid-October.

Martin holds personal bests of 4:09 in the mile, 8:58 in the two-mile, 13:40 in the three-mile and 14:45 in the 5K, according to a Woodlands Online profile published Tuesday, Sept. 29. He told the outlet he plans to major in finance and eventually pursue an MBA.

Head coach Juris Green praised Martin's approach to the sport.

"Elton is a student of the sport. His passion is easy to see and over time that has opened the door to creating one of the best high school distance runners in the United States," Green said.

Martin's 14:45 5K sits in rare company for Woodlands runners. Spencer Cardinal posted a 14:45.01 at the 2019-20 UIL 6A state meet, a time that ranks among the fastest in UIL 6A history.

The Highlanders' cross country program holds 21 boys state titles across 46 state appearances, the most in UIL history. Martin called the 2026-27 squad the most talented roster during his time at the school, naming teammates Will Bishop, James Clairy and Bo Breed. The team also appears on DyeStat's 2026 South Region boys watchlist.

Martin's path to distance running started by accident. His parents would not let him play football, and his middle school did not offer soccer. Six years later, he counts Northern Arizona University senior Colin Sahlman, a four-time Bowerman Watch List selection, as his running role model. Martin said meeting Sahlman a couple of years ago felt like a dream come true.

Off the course, Martin plays electric guitar, watches thrash metal concert videos on a projector and lists Megadeth as his favorite band. He said if he could give a million dollars to one charity, it would be the Spina Bifida Association of America. His uncle has lived with the condition throughout his life.

His family has been a constant presence. Martin said his parents have never missed a single meet across his middle school and high school career. His sister decorates signs and banners for race days, and his grandparents regularly send inspirational quotes.

The UIL Class 6A boys cross country state championship is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
