Fifth and sixth graders walked into a school with no hallway traditions, no class photos on the walls and no history on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as Fowler Intermediate opened its doors for the first time.
The brand-new campus at 3600 Willow Valley Court welcomed its inaugural class of Falcons on the same morning more than 72,000 Conroe ISD students districtwide returned for the 2026-27 school year, according to district records.
Conroe ISD announced the milestone on X the night before, saying the campus was ready to welcome its very first group of students and calling it a moment the district had been building toward all summer.
The school is formally named Janene Fowler Intermediate School, honoring a longtime Conroe ISD science teacher who died in December 2018. Fowler taught at Knox, Branch Crossing and McCullough junior high schools and chaired the district's science department, according to the Houston Chronicle. Principal Amber DeBeaumont leads the new campus.
Fowler Intermediate feeds into Conroe High School and the future Timber Mill High School, which is scheduled to open in August 2027 with grades 9-11.
Bond-funded expansion adds two campuses
Fowler is one of two brand-new schools Conroe ISD opened for this school year. Kacy Arnold Elementary, at 5175 Woodsons Spring Drive in south Montgomery County, also welcomed students Wednesday.
Both schools are funded by the $1.9 billion bond package voters approved in November 2023. Proposition A set aside $1.8 billion for eight new schools and eight additions and renovations across the district.
More construction is coming. Lynn Cartwright Junior High, which will serve students in the Conroe and Timber Mill feeder zones, is scheduled to open in August 2027 alongside Timber Mill High School. As we reported Aug. 1, the board recently approved mascots and colors for both of those campuses.
