The San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office arrested Isais Escobar, 22, on a charge of sexual assault of a child connected to Grace Church in The Woodlands.
Escobar was enrolled in a pastor training program at the church. The alleged assault of a 16-year-old girl occurred Aug. 13 after a youth event at Grace Church, KHOU 11 first reported.
The victim's mother, who is not being identified to protect her daughter, told KHOU 11 reporter Anayeli Ruiz that her children attended the youth event with Escobar and his parents. Escobar's parents are pastors of Iglesia de Cristo Ebenezer Emmanuel, a church in Livingston.
"I know them forever. They are people of God and we trust them," the mother told KHOU 11.
Grace Church told the station that Escobar entered a training program there in 2025. The church said he was not employed by Grace and did not hold a position there. After learning of the allegation under investigation, the church said it immediately dismissed him from the program.
The mother's account differed. She told KHOU 11 that Escobar served as a youth leader and worship leader at Grace, in addition to serving at his parents' church.
Grace Church operates a pastoral training program called FORGE, founded by Senior Pastors Steve and Becky Riggle, according to the church's website. The church did not specify whether Escobar was enrolled in that program.
The mother told KHOU 11 she believes there could be other victims. She said her daughter disclosed the alleged assault several days after it occurred.
Escobar's custody status, bond amount and next court date were not available as of Oct. 3.
Investigators are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim to contact the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office at (936) 653-4367.
