Brett Ligon will keep the Texas Senate seat representing The Woodlands after defeating Democrat Ron Angeletti with 58.3% of the vote in the Nov. 3 election.

Ligon, the Republican incumbent in Senate District 4, collected 205,366 votes districtwide to Angeletti's 146,831, according to Community Impact, with 100% of precincts reporting. All results are unofficial until canvassed.

The win matters locally because District 4 covers portions of Montgomery, Harris, Galveston, Chambers and Jefferson counties. Montgomery County delivered Ligon's strongest margin. He received 127,994 votes there, or 62.87%, compared with 75,602 for Angeletti, according to Woodlands Online.

Ligon, a former Montgomery County district attorney who served 17 years in that role, has held the Senate seat since May. He won a special election after former state Sen. Brandon Creighton chose not to run for re-election and gave up the remainder of his term to lead the Texas Tech University System, Community Impact reported. Ligon's Nov. 3 victory gives him a full term.

Angeletti, his Democratic challenger, described himself in a candidate questionnaire as an educator and special education advocate with more than 20 years of experience in the field.

Montgomery County's conservative lean held firm even as Democrats swept every statewide executive race. PBS reported that Republicans are keeping control of the Texas Senate, though Democrats took the Texas House for the first time since 2002.

As we reported Nov. 3, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race. Woodlands Online reported that Paxton still carried more than 60% of the Montgomery County vote despite losing statewide. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott drew nearly 63% in the county but lost the governor's race to Democrat Gina Hinojosa, according to the same results.

Turnout in Montgomery County reached 53.38%, with 260,209 of 487,460 registered voters casting ballots, according to the Montgomery County Police Reporter.

County-by-county results in the District 4 race showed Ligon also won Chambers County (14,634 to 4,559), Galveston County (1,151 to 281) and Jefferson County (7,471 to 5,994). Angeletti carried the Harris County portion of the district, 44,439 to 41,939, according to Community Impact.

Results become official once certified by the elections commission.
