Nearly one in three fatal crashes in Montgomery County involves an impaired driver. Starting Friday, Aug. 14, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office plans to put more deputies on the road to change that number.
MCSO announced it will participate in the Texas Department of Transportation's Intoxicated Driver Mobilization, a statewide enforcement campaign running through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7. During the 25-day window, additional deputies will patrol county roads with a specific focus on impaired-driving violations, according to an MCSO announcement published Monday.
The campaign arrives as Conroe ISD students are back in class. The district's first day was Aug. 12, and the sheriff's office launched separate school zone patrols earlier this month. MCSO's Woodlands Patrol Division, which serves The Woodlands specifically, is part of the countywide deployment.
The "nearly one in three" fatality statistic comes from recent county data cited by MCSO, though the agency did not specify the time period or dataset behind the figure.
Prior enforcement results
The mobilization adds to an active year for DWI enforcement in Montgomery County. Over New Year's 2026, a multi-agency task force made 49 DWI arrests. Over Memorial Day weekend, 47 people were arrested on impaired-driving charges, according to a post on X from the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.
Over the July 4, 2025, weekend, a coordinated task force of 41 deputies, officers and troopers conducted 389 traffic stops, made 52 DWI arrests and recorded zero fatal crashes countywide. "This outstanding achievement reflects the incredible teamwork and coordination among all involved," Sheriff Wesley Doolittle said in a July 2025 press release announcing those results.
The pattern has continued. Montgomery County logged 54 arrests on Saturday, Aug. 8, with DWI leading all charges at 13 bookings.

MCSO's message to drivers is blunt: even a small amount of alcohol or drugs can slow reaction time, and a single poor choice can carry life-changing consequences. Plan a sober ride.
