Texas artists have until Oct. 4 to submit work for a chance to hang in The Woodlands High School hallways, chosen by the students who walk past them every day.
The Woodlands High School Art Trust (TWHSAT), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, opened its 16th annual call for submissions on Tuesday, Sept. 1, according to the organization's website. A student committee will narrow the entries to approximately 12 finalists. Then the school's roughly 4,500 students vote on which pieces get purchased and added to the permanent collection.
The program started in 2011, when students used proceeds from the Homecoming Dance to buy five works from established artists. Homecoming Dance revenue has funded each year's acquisitions since.
The collection now includes 76 pieces by 62 Texas artists. The works are displayed at both the main campus and the ninth-grade campus so all students can view them daily. Four additional donated pieces make up an ancillary collection that rotates through classrooms.
What artists need to know
Eligible artists must be Texas residents, at least 22 years old and juried. Accepted media include drawings, paintings, mixed media, printmaking, photography and digital media. All work must be wall-hangable, created within the past two years and school-appropriate.
AI-generated artwork is banned. Pieces cannot exceed 9 feet in height or 18 inches in depth. Artists who already have two works in the collection may not submit. Each artist may submit one piece per year, and only online submissions are accepted.
TWHSAT said the student committee oversees the full application process to grow the school's student-selected, student-purchased professional art collection. The organization also received the Dr. David Gottlieb Education Microgrant from The Woodlands Arts Council, according to its homepage.
