The Woodlands Township is adding two pickleball programs at Bear Branch Recreation Center built for residents who need modified instruction or live with Parkinson's disease.

Pickleball for Parkinson's and Adaptive Pickleball both meet on Tuesday mornings at the center's outdoor covered multiuse court, according to a Township press release published Monday, Oct. 5. The programs expand the Township's existing pickleball offerings, which already include tournaments at Falconwing Pickleball Courts.

Pickleball for Parkinson's

The Parkinson's-focused sessions run on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. Each hour-long session incorporates movement, coordination, cognitive engagement and social interaction in what the Township described as a supportive environment.

The Parkinson's Foundation notes that pickleball strengthens balance, agility and cognitive function. Research cited by the foundation shows consistent exercise of at least 2.5 hours per week can slow symptom progression. Socialization matters, too. Isolation after a Parkinson's diagnosis can lead to depression, a common symptom of the disease.

Adaptive Pickleball

Adaptive Pickleball meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The 90-minute sessions are drill-based clinics led by a USA Pickleball Ambassador and certified instructor. Participants learn rules, movement and fundamental strokes before moving into open play.

The Township described the program as an inclusive option for anyone who may benefit from modified instruction.

How to register

Both programs take place at Bear Branch Recreation Center, 5310 Research Forest Drive. Residents can sign up at thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/signupforfun, by calling 281-210-3954 or by emailing [email protected].

The Township's fall 2026 recreation registration opened Aug. 10 on a first-come, first-served basis.
