Eight trolley shelters along The Woodlands Waterway and Town Center corridor will be converted into permanent public art installations under a new partnership between The Woodlands Arts Council and The Woodlands Township.

The project, announced Wednesday, July 29, will feature digitally printed artwork on durable laminated glass panels integrated into the eight shelters, each piece created by a professional artist. The stops span the corridor from the Library (T1) and Town Green Park (T3) to Lake Robbins (T10), The Woodlands Towers (T11), Woodloch Forest (T12), Waterway Square (T13), the Hotel & Convention Center (T14), and The Pavilion's south side (T15).

TWAC President Haley Garcia called it one of the largest public art expansions in The Woodlands in recent years.

"This project brings original public art into everyday life while giving businesses and community members the opportunity to help shape the future of The Woodlands," Garcia said.

Township Board Chairman Brad Bailey said the installations will strengthen the community's identity as a place that invests in public spaces for both residents and visitors.

Business underwriting now open

Local businesses, foundations, and individuals can underwrite individual shelters. The opportunity is live now. Sponsors will receive permanent on-site recognition at their shelter for the life of the installation, and funds raised will cover fabrication and installation of the artwork.

The trolley shelter program is separate from TWAC's Art Bench initiative, which has placed 32 permanent art benches across The Woodlands since 2015, according to the Arts Council. The nonprofit has invested more than $1.8 million in the community over two decades through public art, scholarships, and arts education.

The eight shelters serve thousands of riders and pedestrians each year along the Waterway. No timeline for artist selection or installation has been announced.
