Montgomery County deputies arrested Dillon Smith on Saturday, Aug. 1, on a felony organized retail theft warrant after he allegedly stole nearly $15,000 in baseball bats and gloves from Dick's Sporting Goods and Academy Sports locations across Montgomery and Harris counties.

Smith targeted multiple stores between Friday, June 26, and Thursday, July 2, according to an unsigned Montgomery County Sheriff's Office press release. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

He didn't resist.

The charge falls under Texas Penal Code §31.16, the state's organized retail theft statute. A 2025 expansion of that law, SB 1300, allows prosecutors to aggregate multiple thefts committed as part of one scheme across different stores and dates. At nearly $15,000, the alleged haul places the offense in the third-degree felony range under the statute, which carries two to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.

Smith also had outstanding Harris County warrants for theft and evading on foot at the time of his arrest.

The sheriff's office said the investigation remains active and additional charges may be filed. The specific store locations targeted during the spree have not been disclosed.

Smith's arrest is the latest in a string of felony property-crime cases in The Woodlands. Deputies arrested a multi-state vehicle burglary suspect after a pursuit on Sunday, Aug. 2, and a woman was charged at the Woodlands Mall with stolen credit cards and a postal master key on Saturday, Aug. 1.

No court date has been set.
