Woodlands-area seniors will get a dedicated 8,000-square-foot facility for meals, activities, and socializing after Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ritch Wheeler announced plans for a new senior center off Pruitt Road near I-45.

Wheeler made the announcement Thursday, July 23, at a senior luncheon at the Kevin Brady Community Center and Library, telling attendees the $420,000 project will be funded entirely from the Precinct 3 budget and built on county land near the precinct office at 1130 Pruitt Road.

"One of the things that we figured out very quickly was, it's just too much going off of this building for you to settle in and enjoy the things that y'all want to enjoy," Wheeler told seniors at the luncheon. "And so what we decided very quickly as a staff was we wanted you to have your own space."

Why a new facility

The Kevin Brady Community Center, which opened in September 2025, hosts everything from elections to community events, creating scheduling conflicts that have squeezed out senior programming. Wheeler told Community Impact the center is used by so many groups that seniors haven't had a consistent, dedicated space.

Seniors lost access to recurring programs like bingo, gentle exercise, crafts, bridge, mahjong, line dancing, and French class when other groups needed the building.

The senior population in Montgomery County is also growing fast. Census Bureau American Community Survey five-year estimates show the county's population age 60 and over reached 137,047 in 2024, up from 105,524 in 2019. That's a nearly 30% increase, outpacing overall county population growth of just under 20% in the same period.

What the new center will include

The facility will seat 250 in its dining area and include a kitchen for hot meals at lunchtime, several activity rooms, green space, a covered porch, and a covered drop-off area for inclement weather. It will operate Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Three partners are collaborating on the project: Precinct 3, Interfaith of The Woodlands, and Meals on Wheels Montgomery County. Meals on Wheels, led by President and CEO Carrie Watkins, will provide daily lunches. Interfaith of The Woodlands, led by President and CEO Missy Herndon, will run activities and programming, according to Community Impact.

Meals on Wheels already serves two other senior centers in the county and provides free transportation for seniors to medical appointments, pharmacies, and grocery stores.

Access and eligibility

Wheeler said the new center's location closer to I-45 will improve access for seniors across the precinct and the broader county. Any Montgomery County senior is welcome. Not just Precinct 3 residents.

Timeline

Wheeler said the tentative completion date is early 2027. No groundbreaking date, Commissioners Court vote, or public comment period on the project has been publicly announced. Residents can contact the Precinct 3 office at 1130 Pruitt Road or visit mctxpct3.org for updates.
