Luke Landry is the new Highlander mascot at The Woodlands High School, joining co-mascot Reid Treutle as the campus marks 50 years of Highlander tradition this school year.

The Caledonian, the TWHS student newspaper, profiled Landry in a feature published Sunday, Aug. 30. Landry got his start as a mascot in seventh grade at McCullough Junior High, where his mother suggested the role before he could sign up for football.

To earn the TWHS spot, Landry passed a two-round tryout: an interview and a two-minute skit he created with help from his family. The skit featured him taming a horse while wearing the Highlander kilt.

He and his family were eating Chinese food when the results arrived on a Friday just before summer break.

"It was right before summer started, it was a Friday," Landry told The Caledonian. "We all celebrated!"

Over the summer, Landry visited the main campus daily to plan pep rallies and game-day routines with Treutle. On game nights, he works near the cheerleaders, focused on firing up the student section.

Landry said he hopes to learn tumbling and keep the mascot role for the next couple of years.
