Macayla Potter, who first stepped onto a wrestling mat at age five, has joined The Woodlands High School's girls wrestling coaching staff for the 2026-27 school year.

Potter grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, where her father coached wrestling. She tagged along to his practices before her parents enrolled her in a youth team at five. She moved to Texas at age nine and has lived in San Marcos, Cypress and Spring before joining TWHS.

"One of my greatest wrestling memories comes from my sophomore year of high school," Potter told The Caledonian, the TWHS student newspaper, in a Thursday, Sept. 3 profile. "My dad was my coach, and he coached me to a District Championship. I beat an opponent that I had previously lost to three times."

Potter brings 14 years of competitive experience to the program. The TWHS wrestling team's Instagram page announced her addition on Tuesday, May 19, calling her an assistant coach. The Caledonian's profile, published months later, identified her as the girls wrestling coach. The exact scope of her role could not be independently confirmed.

Her short-term goal is clear. Potter said she wants to send as many girls as possible to the UIL State Tournament this season, calling the roster "very talented and filled with potential." Over the next few years, she wants to bring home a team state championship.

This is Potter's first year on staff at The Woodlands High School, part of Conroe ISD. She told The Caledonian the experience has been positive so far, describing the team as "awesome and always up for a challenge."

Potter is also recruiting. She said some of the best wrestlers she has known were shy, quiet people who were hesitant to try the sport. She encouraged anyone interested to show up and give it a shot.

Club practices run Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at The Woodlands High School, 6101 Research Forest Drive.
