Woodlands Township residents can drop off old paint, motor oil, chemicals and other hazardous household items for free on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Sterling Ridge Park & Ride.

The one-day drive-thru collection runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 8001 McBeth Way, according to a township press release. The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department is hosting the event in cooperation with the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Staff will unload items directly from vehicles. Residents stay in their cars.

The event accepts aerosol cans, antifreeze, drain cleaners, fire extinguishers, paint thinner, latex and oil-based paint, motor oil and oil filters, weed killers, propane tanks up to 20 pounds, fluorescent and compact fluorescent lightbulbs, mercury-containing products such as thermometers, and reactive chemicals like bleach and ammonia.

Tube lights longer than four feet will not be accepted. The township also will not accept smoke detectors, needles or other biohazardous waste, ammunition, explosives or gas cylinders other than the specified propane tanks.

Business waste and trailers are not allowed.

The event has limited capacity and may close before 1 p.m. once the limit is reached, the township said. A bid document the township issued for a contractor to handle the collection estimated about 800 vehicles based on past events.

Residents should sort similar items together in bags or boxes and place them in the trunk or back seat. The township warns against mixing hazardous products together.

A valid driver's license or utility bill is required to prove residency within The Woodlands Township. Grace DeCarlo, the township's environmental education coordinator, is listed as the event contact in bid documents.

If weather forces a cancellation, the township's backup date is Saturday, Dec. 5, according to the bid document.
