Nearly a dozen bystanders lifted a rolling Honda CR-V off a 10-year-old boy who was ejected and pinned beneath the SUV on FM 2090 at Westgate early Sunday, August 2, freeing him before emergency crews arrived.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. as the boy's father was driving home from an overnight church event in south Houston with his 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son, according to a report by Scott Engle of Montgomery County Police Reporter.

Investigators believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing the CR-V to drift off the right side of the road and strike a mailbox. When the driver overcorrected, the SUV crossed FM 2090 and began rolling.

The boy was ejected during the rollover. The vehicle came to rest on top of him.

Witnesses rushed from their vehicles and physically lifted the SUV off the child. The group freed him before first responders could reach the scene.

The boy was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands, where he was reported to be seriously injured but communicating with doctors. He was then airlifted to Texas Children's Hospital in the Texas Medical Center for further treatment.

No update on his condition at Texas Children's has been released.

The Texas Department of Public Safety led the crash investigation, with assistance from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Crash Team. FM 2090 was closed for roughly three hours and reopened just before 10 a.m.

Neither DPS nor the Sheriff's Office has released an on-record statement beyond confirming their investigative roles. No charges or citations had been announced as of Sunday morning. No information about injuries to the father or the 13-year-old daughter has been released.
