The Goose's Acre Bistro and Irish Pub will celebrate 20 years in The Woodlands on Dec. 5, as first reported by Community Impact Newspaper.
Co-owners Brian Young and Colm O'Neill bought the pub in County Cork, Ireland, and shipped it by boat to the United States, Young told Community Impact. The restaurant sits at 21 Waterway Ave. in Town Center.
Community Impact reported that Goose's Acre was the first restaurant to open in Town Center 20 years ago. A Visit The Woodlands profile published in February 2023 described it as "one of the first restaurants to open up on" the Woodlands Waterway.
The pub's origin story stretches back to Midleton, a town in County Cork. According to the restaurant's website, the original Goose's Acre Irish Pub stood on Main Street in Midleton, directly in front of a small triangular park. The park's name is believed to have come from a local resident, Kate Barr, who grazed her gaggle of geese there.
The pub had been handed down from father to son through the years before it was forced to close in 2005 to make way for new development. Young and O'Neill were visiting family in Ireland around that time, according to the Visit The Woodlands profile. They decided to buy the pub and ship its contents across the Atlantic.
Brandi Watkins, the restaurant's general manager, was hired on opening day to find staff and develop the menu, according to the same profile. In that February 2023 article, Watkins said, "We are not a chain and we are not a franchise. From the very beginning, we knew it was important to establish ourselves in the community and that is what we have done."
The two-story restaurant has a sprawling outdoor patio along the Waterway. It also hosts a Monday running club that, as of the 2023 profile, drew upward of 100 participants each week.
Goose's Acre runs daily specials, including half-price fish and chips on Mondays and half-price burgers on Wednesdays, according to the restaurant's specials page. Kids eat free on Sundays.
The pub also hosts an annual St. Baldrick's head-shaving fundraiser for childhood cancer research. In the February 2023 profile, Watkins said the event draws people to the patio the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day. "We are hoping to break the half a million dollar mark this year for fundraising," she said at the time.
The Dec. 5 celebration takes place at 21 Waterway Ave.
