Lone Star College System students will have 50 guaranteed pathways to transfer credits toward bachelor's degrees at five Texas universities starting in fall 2027.

LSCS signed the Guaranteed Transfer Partnership Agreements (GTPAs) with Prairie View A&M University, Sam Houston State University, Texas State University, Texas Tech University and the University of Houston-Downtown at a public ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 28, Woodlands Online reported.

The agreements spell out in advance how coursework completed at Lone Star College will count toward a bachelor's degree at each partner school, according to the college's GTPA page. Students who follow one of the 50 approved pathways and stay continuously enrolled can lock in that credit guarantee for up to six years, even if a course requirement changes later.

Students who transfer under the agreements will enter partner universities with at least 60 credit hours recognized, placing them as juniors. Each partner university will assign an admissions counselor to help transferring students navigate the process.

What it means for Woodlands-area families

High school students taking dual credit courses through Lone Star College can also benefit. Under what the college calls "Triple Credit," a dual credit course taken in high school counts toward a diploma, a Lone Star College degree and a bachelor's degree at a partner university, with the transfer already guaranteed.

Conroe ISD already partners with Lone Star College on dual credit programs, including an automotive technology course, according to the district's career and technical education page.

Seelpa Keshvala, LSCS executive vice chancellor for academics, said the five universities "have chosen to partner with us in a critical step in that journey for our students: the transfer process," according to Woodlands Online.

LSCS Chancellor Mario K. Castillo said the partnerships "help create a more seamless path for students to transfer to one of our five partner universities and to continue working toward their academic goals."

Scale of the system

LSCS enrollment surpassed 100,000 students for the first time in the 2026–2027 academic year, reaching 100,023 across more than 20 locations. In 2024, more than 16,000 Lone Star College students transferred to four-year universities, according to the college's transfer page.

Texas Sen. Paul Bettencourt, chair of the Texas Senate Committee on Higher Education, attended the signing. He said the agreements cut "through all the worry of, 'Am I taking the right classes?'" and called them "a fantastic step forward for the state of Texas," according to Woodlands Online.

The agreements fulfill a goal in the college system's strategic plan, which set a target of five guaranteed transfer partnerships with 50 total pathways by 2030. The plan also aims for a 70% university graduation rate among first-time LSCS transfer students.

Both LSCS and its partner universities will review each agreement annually. Students can find pathway details at LoneStar.edu/GTPA.
