Nearly 100,000 Montgomery County residents struggle to put enough food on the table, and with back-to-school expenses squeezing family budgets, the Montgomery County Food Bank is bringing free produce to five locations across the county between Tuesday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 8.
The Food Bank, headquartered in Conroe, serves the entire county through more than 90 partner agencies, including organizations in The Woodlands area. Board Chairman Jim Carman also serves as president of the Houston region for Howard Hughes, the master developer of The Woodlands.
Each drive-thru distribution serves 150 to 250 families on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out, according to the Food Bank's programs page. No registration is required.
Two of the five stops are hosted by school districts as families juggle supply lists and grocery bills simultaneously.
Food Bank President and CEO Kristine Marlow told Community Impact Newspaper in June 2025 that the organization had seen a 66% increase in demand over three years, yet supply had not kept pace. She said summer months are especially challenging because children lose access to school meal programs.
The need is real. A May 2025 Feeding America report found the county's annual food budget shortfall had ballooned from $37.2 million in 2019 to $64.5 million in 2023.
The Food Bank works with more than 80 schools across all six Montgomery County school districts to feed 1,500 children weekly during the school year.
